Course Description:

JOU 191 Newspaper

This has been designed to give students course credit for the practical experiences they gain by writing and editing articles for the student newspaper, The Lakeholm Viewer.

Texts:

No text is required for this class. However, The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual is highly recommended. Also the text Basic News Writing by Mencher (5th edition) is recommended. If the student has plans in the professional writing major, both of these texts will be required in their future studies.

Class Procedure:

JOU 191 will meet weekly for for reporters to discuss possible story directions and to work out assigned topics for each issue. Each story handed in on disk for the newspaper will also be handed in to Dr. Rearick in hard copy (this means as a paper). These will be graded on clarity, style, and mechanics. Extra credit will be added with the reporter develops a story on her or his own. Students will be graded on what they hand in, not what is used in the paper. Appearance in a paper is an editorial decision outside of the parameters of this class.

Class Objectives

  1. To develop in students through the processes of research and reporting the skills to listen respectively, think critically, reason clearly, evaluate objectively, and communicate clearly.
  2. To encourage students toward acquiring attitudes which stimulate awareness of self and one's environment, enabling them to respond creatively and positively to challenges.
  3. To encourage students toward the maximum development of communication skills and abilities.
  4. To promote within students the vision and ability to apply communication skills needed for staff meetings both by editor and reporter in order to enhance personal relationships, human society and God's kingdom.
  5. To enable student to improve written communications through directed experience.

Lakeholm Viewer's Goals

It should be noted that The Lakeholm Viewer and Cyber-Lakeholn are intended to be the pubic voice of the student body. It is NOT a public relations document. The Communicator is a fine magazine and serves our community well. The newspaper is meant to inform students of issues which concern the campus family and to express opinions is about such issues. It should also be noted that neither the Lakeholm Viewer nor Cyber-Lakeholm are "gripe boards." Opinions published in the Viewer should be thought out and constructive. It is easy to complain it is much harder to develop viable alternatives.

Our Over-all Goals Are:

  1. To keep campus informed of major events involving the campus and Mount Vernon community.
  2. To keep campus informed of issues which concern the MVNC community.
  3. To be timely with news and publications
  4. To be accurate, impartial, and honest in reporting the news.
  5. To use objective research skills when investigating a matter for publication.
  6. To be aware of the consequence of the news published. We exist for the greater good of the community.

For the Reporters:

Be certain to hand in work in a timely manner. You should have an article written for each edition of the Lakeholm Viewer. This year the paper will be bi-monthly with the first issue coming out at the end of September. The editors plan to put out issues this semester. All material will be submitted to the "Newspaper" folder on the J drive of the PC computers.

For the Editors:

Except for the business, photo and the layout and design editors, students who serve as editors for pages on which they write need to remember that while much of their work is in laying out their pages they are also required to hand in written material as well.

Business Editor--will, after the a consultation with the editor, be graded on revenue building and record keeping. The record book should be handed in

at the end of the semester and there will be a mid-semester audit meeting with the advisor.

Layout Editor--will, after instructor's consultation with main editors, be based on

the appearance and regularity of the paper's layout.

Photo Editor--will, after instructor's consultation with main editors, be based on

the variety and regularity of photos which are submitted.

Article Format:

Never Wait Till the Last Minute with Computers:

Trouble Will Arise!

Disk copy format should be done on a IBM compatible system since the newspaper program is set up that way. (We are hoping to get the PC form of "Quark Express" this semester. If you do not have a disk please see one of the editors.

Hard copy articles should be in MLA format. On the next page, you will find the beginning of a sample article. Double space your work. Place your name and page number on the right side of the page's footer (usually about half an inch down). The actual heading should be placed on the left hand side should begin a inch from the top:
